Norðlýsið is the oldest Faroese-built sailing ship still in existence.

Originally constructed for the fishery in 1945, it was later restored and re-rigged as a schooner by Faroese artist Tróndur Patursson in the 1980s— a transformation he considers one of his greatest works of art.

Since then, Norðlýsið has become an icon of Faroese tourism, cherished by both locals and visitors as a unique way to experience the Faroe Islands from the sea. In 2020, the ship’s guest facilities were modernized with new toilets, ventilation, and heating, ensuring comfort without compromising its historic character.

Measuring 18.82 meters in length, 5.21 meters in width, and 2.32 meters in depth, Norðlýsið has a gross tonnage of 44.71 BRT and 5.21 NRT. It is powered by a 195 kW Volvo Penta engine from 2020, and its main mast rises 23 meters from keel to top. The ship normally sails with five sails, with two additional topsails used on special occasions.

Our mission is to give you an authentic, yet comfortable and safe experience onboard this iconic vessel.

Welcome onboard.
